It’s not just a supermoon, Victoria!
Here to light up the sky on Wednesday, August 30th is described as the biggest and brightest full moon of 2023 and is said to be the ‘blue’ supermoon or ‘Blue Moon.’
However, a Blue Moon doesn’t mean the moon will appear blue—a common misconception!
According to NASA, it has nothing to do with colour, and is instead a phrase used to describe a rare lunar phenomena when two full moons appear in the same month.
Although it is indeed rare, it is also a continuing occurrence—but the next Blue Moon won’t be until 2037, so you better make sure you don’t miss this one!
The moon will begin rising at around 8:53 p.m., and harmoniously accompanying the blue supermoon will be the beloved ringed planet Saturn, which reached its brightest ‘opposition’ peak on August 26th and 27th.
Additionally, NASA says that the upcoming full moon is also in alignment with the Hindu festival Rakhi Purnima—which celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters.
