A collision in Campbell River resulted in one woman’s death so an investigation has been opened into the matter to ascertain whether or not police action or inaction led to her demise.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has now taken over the investigation as the police watchdog.
According to the Campbell River RCMP, at around 5:30 a.m. on Monday, July 31st, officers received a call to report that there was a grey Subaru Outback headed northbound on the Island Highway near Perkins Road and being driven erratically.
A half hour later, at approximately 6 a.m., police received another report. This time it was a collision which involved a grey Subaru Outback.
Police say the Outback had been travelling southbound when it left the road just north of the 6400-block of Island Highway.
The Outback had one sole occupant, the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The IIO investigates any situation that police have a hand in where someone becomes seriously injured or dead as a result of their action or inaction.
In this case, the IIO were not clear as to why they are investigating this situation, while unconfirmed, one possible explanation is that they were unable to intervene within the 30-minute window between the calls.
“Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death,” the IIO said in a media release.
Anyone with information or video footage of the incident should contact the IIO at 1-855-446-8477 or via their website.
