After 18 years of marriage, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau are separating.
In a Instagram statement, the prime minister announced the mutual decision to separate, following numerous meaningful and challenging conversations—the same statement was issued on Sophie’s account.
“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build,” said Trudeau.
Justin and wife Sophie are parents to three children: Xavier, aged 15, Ella-Grace, aged 14, and Hadrien, aged nine.
Trudeau is the second prime minister to declare a separation while holding office.
His father, Pierre Trudeau, went through a separation from his wife Margaret in 1979, eventually finalizing their divorce in 1984.
