An Oak Bay teenager’s joyride took a costly turn when his car was impounded for seven days after he was caught driving at nearly 100 km/h in a 40 km/h zone.

The incident, which occurred in the 900 block of Beach Drive just after 11 p.m. on Monday, August 7th.

The 17-year-old, holding an “N” driver’s license, was issued an excessive speeding ticket amounting to $368 after being recorded speeding at a staggering 96 km/h in a designated 40 km/h zone.

In addition to the hefty fine, his vehicle was towed and impounded for a week.

This incident follows another recent case of vehicle impoundment in Oak Bay. Last week, a separate driver faced similar consequences, albeit for different reasons.

Oak Bay police were engaged in a routine traffic stop when an officer noticed a vehicle with a severely damaged windshield. The damage was so severe that it compromised the driver’s visibility, posing a significant safety risk.

The 35-year-old woman behind the wheel had her vehicle towed for a mandatory safety inspection. Further investigation revealed that the driver was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

As a result, she was slapped with a $276 fine for driving without proper authorization.

“Oak Bay police remind vehicle owners and operators to ensure any spiderweb or cracked windshields do not impede the driver’s vision, or the vehicle may be subject to inspection and tow at the owner’s expense,” police said in a media release.
