‘One Book, One Community’: Greater Victoria Public Library introduces new reading program

Looking for a new book club? Why not join a city-wide one?

The Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) is pleased to announce the launch of their brand new reading program, One Book, One Community.

It’s available to everyone that wishes to participate and is a great way to celebrate local authors and the joy of reading.

They’re working in partnership with IslandLink and Kootenay Library Federation libraries to connect public library users through a shared experience while also promoting the endless adventure that comes from stories.

You get to pick your level of involvement!

If all you want to do is read/listen, you’re welcome to do so, or you can join the dedicated online discussions for the One Book program.

GPVL has chosen local author Susan Juby and her book, Mindful Murder, as the first One Book read.

It’s described as a cozy and comedic mystery with an intriguing plot and quirky characters that are sure to grip readers!

“The story unfolds in the wake of a suspicious death at an upscale spiritual retreat, where a quartet of suspects conceals motives for murder. If you have a penchant for ‘whodunit’ adventures, ‘Mindful of Murder’ is the perfect fall read,” said Stephanie Marston, Public Services Librarian.

“This book has all the elements of a fantastic story. We can’t wait to dive into this mystery alongside our patrons.”

If this sounds like a great fit for you, there are physical, digital, and audio versions of the book available for library users—for those that don’t have a library card but still want to participate, you can sign up for a temporary one here.

“Books have the power to connect people and broaden perspectives,” said Cheryl Landry, Public Services Librarian.

“This program is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to explore a new author and perhaps make new connections along the way.”

Additionally, GVPL will be hosting an in‐person event with award‐winning bestselling author Susan Juby at the Esquimalt Branch on Friday, October 27th!

This event will be free to attend and there’s no advance registration required.

A virtual (Zoom) event with Susan Juby is also planned for Wednesday, November 29th—the registration link for this will be coming soon.
