As September ushers in the gradual transition from summer to autumn, Halloween enthusiasts are already gearing up for the spookiest night of the year.

Halloween isn’t just about tricks and treats; it’s also the time for adults and kids alike to unleash their creativity through costumes.

While some prefer the classic ghoulish attire like devils, black cats, and ghosts, others seize the opportunity to channel their favorite pop culture icons of the moment.

Intriguingly, the anticipation for Halloween is already building, and trend expert Nick Drewe, from online E-commerce platform Wethrift, has dug into global Google Trends data from the past month to unveil which pop culture-inspired costumes are soaring in demand this year.

1 – Harley Quinn costume +153% past month:

Despite the sequel to the infamous Joker movie being slated for release in October 2024, the buzz surrounding it has already reached fever pitch.

Thanks to Lady Gaga’s behind-the-scenes portrayal of the iconic Harley Quinn, the internet has gone wild, sparking a 153% surge in searches for the Harley Quinn costume over the past month. Gaga’s bleached blonde bob, fiery red lipstick, and smudged eye makeup have captivated fans, with her Instagram post garnering over 32.4K comments.

It appears that enthusiasts are eager to recreate this tantalizing glimpse of Harley Quinn, even a year before the movie hits the screens. Alternatively, some may choose to emulate Margot Robbie’s interpretation of the character from the 2020 release “Birds of Prey.”

2-  Ghostface costume +84% past month:

The infamous slasher villain ‘Ghostface’ from the “Scream” movies has remained a Halloween staple since the 90s.

Following the release of “Scream 6” earlier this year, the demand for this classic costume has surged by 84% in the past month.

With another installment in the works, it’s safe to say that Ghostface will continue to haunt Halloween festivities this year.

3 – Barbie and Ken costume +76% past month:

In the wake of Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster Barbie movie, expect to see a surge of Barbie-inspired outfits this Halloween. Coordinated couples’ costumes are always a hit, and Barbie and Ken fit the bill perfectly.

The world is already embracing the ‘Barbiecore’ trend, with searches for Barbie and Ken costumes skyrocketing by 76% over the past month.

With Barbie’s signature blonde hair and sparkling pink jumpsuits, alongside Ken’s beachwear or iconic fur coat, this duo is set to dominate the list of this year’s most popular Halloween looks.

4 – Super Mario costume +67% past month:

The release of the Super Mario movie in April 2023 ensures that classic red and blue dungarees and fake mustaches will be a common sight this Halloween.

Searches for ‘Super Mario costume’ have surged by 67% over the past month, indicating that these timeless video game characters will be among the most sought-after Halloween costume choices this year.

5 – Wednesday costume +43% past month:

The hit Netflix series ‘Wednesday’ has left an indelible mark on pop culture, inspiring viral TikTok dance routines and a new generation of Wednesday Addams fans.

Released after Halloween 2022, this year marks the first opportunity for people to replicate Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday Addams at Halloween parties.

The classic look encompasses black dresses, ruffles, frills, oversized collars, dark hair, and gothic-style makeup, making it an enticing option for Halloween enthusiasts.

6 – Little Mermaid costume +41% past month:

With the live-action remake of Disney’s classic “The Little Mermaid” hitting cinemas in May this year, a wave of mermaid-inspired beauty and fashion trends known as ‘mermaidcore’ took over TikTok and Pinterest.

Searches for Little Mermaid costumes have increased by 41% over the past month, suggesting that many are planning an Ariel-inspired look for this year’s festivities.

To achieve the look, think red hair and sparkling iridescent clothing and makeup for a glamorous take on fish scales.

7 – Oppenheimer costume +17% past month:

A cinematic phenomenon of 2023, “Oppenheimer,” has secured its place on the list of trending costumes this year.

Cillian Murphy’s character, relatively simple to replicate, sports formal wear, a long trench coat, and a wide-brimmed hat.

The ‘Barbenheimer’ weekend of July 2023, where fans flocked to cinemas to watch both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” only adds to the allure of these characters as costume choices for Halloween 2023.
