West Shore RCMP rescue injured beaver in Langford

In a heartwarming twist of events, the West Shore RCMP turned into wildlife heroes when they came to the rescue of a distressed beaver on a chilly morning.

This heart-pounding, tail-slapping drama unfolded on September 5th at the crack of dawn when an injured beaver found itself in a tricky situation on Millstream Road near Bear Mountain Parkway in Langford.

At 6:14 Tuesday morning, the West Shore RCMP received an unusual call—a beaver was blocking traffic!

The furry culprit, a teenage female beaver, had a tough time keeping its wits about itself. With trembling limbs and a distinct lack of enthusiasm for crossing the road, it was clear something was amiss.

Suspicions arose that she might have had a run-in with a car.

Concerned for the beaver’s welfare, officers they knew they couldn’t just leave her hanging by a thread.

In a flurry of calls, they reached out to the Animal Control Emergency Line and the BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC) for guidance. They were told the beaver urgently needed medical attention, but here’s the kicker: it was the crack of dawn, and there was no one available to collect the distressed dam-builder.

Undeterred, these officers decided to take matters into their own hands.

Armed with a dog control snare and a tarp, they pulled off the most unconventional police escort ever! They coaxed the distressed beaver into their police car, careful not to stress her out further or become the recipients of a potentially toothy thank-you.

Once safely nestled in the backseat, the beaver was whisked away to Wild ARC.

The staff there were ready and waiting to give her the royal treatment. The latest update from Wild ARC?

Our beaver friend is in high spirits and well on her way to a full recovery!

“These officers took it upon themselves to go above and beyond and ensure that the beaver received the best possible chance at survival,” said Cst. Andrew Matheson, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer.
