‘A haven for wildlife’: BBC names Saturna Island among best places to see wildlife worldwide

It’s wonderful to be recognized, but to be praised by Planet Earth III creators?—now, that’s a new level of awesome!

In celebration of David Attenborough’s Planet Earth III release, Condé Nast Traveler has published an article detailing the show creators’ favourite places to view wildlife worldwide.

Among the top wildlife hotspots was BCs very own Saturna Island!

“More than 50% of this island is protected, making it a haven for wildlife,” said Estelle Cheuk, the Assistant Producer for Planet Earth III.

In the article, she gushes over the activity offshore and the incredible amount of activity from fish, birds, and the beloved killer whale.

“While the whales are perhaps the island’s most iconic visitors, the Planet Earth III team came to Saturna Island to film one of its more unusual residents—the wandering garter snakes,” said Cheuk.

“On hot summer days, these snakes make their way to East Point shores and, remarkably, dive into its cold waters to make the most of the ocean’s riches to feast on.”

Cheuk also commented on how remarkably passionate the Saturna community is about the island’s wildlife research and education programs.

She mentioned that Saturna Island Marine Research and Education Society (SIMRES) is responsible for the conducting and support of scientific wildlife research and the education offered to the island’s residents and beyond.

Her list of what you’ll likely spot on your own adventures to Saturna Island include bald eagles, oystercatchers, killer whales, humpback whales, harbour seals, sea lions, garter snakes!

What are you waiting for—hop on a ferry and see for yourself!
