BC launches inquest into death of Port Alberni man who died in police custody

Share

The BC government has launched an inquest into the death of a Vancouver Island man.

35-year-old Aaron Lee Prince died while in police custody in October 2017, and now, the BC Coroners Service is launching an inquest to determine how and why he died.

Prince was born and raised in Port Alberni and Parksville and worked on Vancouver Island as a heavy equipment operator.

BC RCMP did not share the circumstances surrounding his death publicly.

In British Columbia, inquests are mandatory when someone dies while in police’s custody and they serve to determine the circumstances surrounding the person’s death, aid the province in avoiding deaths of similar nature going forward and giving the public some reassurance that the government is investigating.

At the inquest, a jury will determine these matters and offer their feedback to the presiding coroner.

The coroner’s inquest will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 7th at the Nanaimo Law Courts.
