Heavy rain and snow prompts weather warning for three Vancouver Island highways

Share

Be prepared for treacherous driving conditions Tuesday as heavy rain and wet snow is expected on Vancouver Island.

According to Environment Canada, the skies are set to unleash a deluge as a low-pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska is moving towards the BC south coast, bringing in cold air and snow levels.

A special weather statement from Environment Canada is warning of heavy rainfall, with potential impacts on travel, including on Highways 4, 19 and 28.

Impacted areas include Greater Victoria, Malahat Highway, Southern Gulf Islands, and East Vancouver Island, extending from Duncan to Fanny Bay.

This heavy rainfall event is expected to occur on Tuesday, from morning till night. So, make sure you are prepared for a day of wet conditions.

The forecasted rainfall amounts range from 30 to 50 mm, and in some cases, precipitation could be intense. Such heavy rainfall can lead to localized flooding, making roads slippery and dangerous.

Weather alerts are also in place for the Port Alberni summit between Coombs and Port Alberni and Sutton Pass between Port Alberni and Kennedy Lake.

Higher elevations of Highway 28 between Gold River and Campbell River and Highway 19 between Port Hardy and Campbell River will also see snow.

This mix of rain and snow can create treacherous road conditions, so be extra cautious if you plan to travel in these regions.

In addition to the heavy rain and possible wet snow, gusty winds will accompany this weather system. Windy conditions can make driving even more challenging, particularly when combined with heavy rain and wet snow. Be prepared for reduced visibility and potential hazards on the road.

While the next 24 to 48 hours appear to full of weather surprises, later this week, the Victoria area is expected to see the first cold-snap of the season.

Cold air is forecasted to hit the region on Friday, October 27th, when the overnight low is projected to plummet to a bone-chilling -1°C.

The weekend holds better news for those looking to enjoy the outdoors. Saturday and Sunday are expected to bring clear skies and abundant sunshine.

High temperatures are predicted to reach a more comfortable 10°C, making it an ideal time to visit the pumpkin patch or indulge in autumnal activities without the biting cold.
