An iconic farmers market near Nanaimo has been destroyed by fire.
The Cassidy Farm Market, located along the Trans-Canada Highway across from Nanaimo airport was destroyed in an early morning fire Wednesday.
Fire crews from the Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department were called to the beloved farmers market just before 3 a.m.—North Oyster, North Cedar and Extension were also called to assist with the blaze, however, the building was already entirely engulfed in flames before fire fighters arrived on scene.
This iconic market, which has been a cherished island landmark for over four decades, was a hub for fresh produce, delicious delicacies, and community gatherings. The devastating incident has left the local community in shock and mourning the loss of a significant part of their heritage.
Originally known as Johnson’s Farm Market, it first opened its doors in 1979, serving as a testament to the enduring spirit of family-owned businesses. Over the years, it transformed into Cassidy Farm Market & Deli.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire remains unknown and is under investigation.
