There’s a solar eclipse happening over Vancouver Island this weekend

Wait for the clouds to clear and keep your eyes on the sky!

On Saturday, October 14th, an annular solar eclipse is expected to be visible from areas in North, Central, and South America.

And although BC isn’t in its direct path, a partial eclipse will still be viewable from Vancouver Island and will begin around 8 a.m. to the east-southeast.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between earth and the sun—resulting in a completely or partly obscured view of the sun.

According to NASA, because the moon is farther away from earth, it appears smaller than the sun and does not completely cover the star.

This is what creates the iconic “ring of fire” effect in the sky.

Remember that it is never safe to look directly into the sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing.

NASA says you can also use an indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector.

Let’s hope for clear skies!
