Tuesday night’s wind storms knock out power for nearly 17,000 on Vancouver Island

Power is still out for thousands of Vancouver Islanders following last night’s storm.

Weather warnings were issued by Environment Canada for several regions on the island due to the intense winds and heavy rainfall on Tuesday, October 24th.

The storm persisted through the evening until Wednesday morning when the rain finally let up.

As of this publication, BC Hydro says that in southern Vancouver Island there are still 76 outages which have caused power to be knocked out for 12,755 customers — many of those outages being on the Gulf Islands.

The northern island didn’t fare much better with 4,183 customers still having no power due to 20 outages.

Despite the severity of the wind storm and rains in Greater Victoria, the area remained unscathed by outages.

“Crews will continue to work throughout the day to make repairs and restore power,” said BC Hydro in a public advisory.

“Additional crews will arrive on the first ferries to the Gulf Islands this morning to aid in restoration efforts.”

BC Hydro says they will be posting updates and listing estimated restoration times via their website throughout the day.

They also want to remind people to call 911 and stay back at least 10 metres if they come across a downed power line.
