Canada’s renowned MacLean’s magazine has unveiled its 2024 Canadian university rankings, featuring a Vancouver Island school.

The University of Victoria (UVic) has once again proven its academic prowess by securing the second spot in Maclean’s Magazine’s annual Canadian university rankings among comprehensive universities.

This is the sixth consecutive year that UVic has been ranked first or second. Simon Fraser University, located in Burnaby, clinched the coveted first place.

Maclean’s comprehensive university rankings employ a comprehensive assessment methodology, taking into account 12 distinct categories that gauge various aspects of university life. These categories cover a wide spectrum, including student support, faculty performance, student satisfaction, available resources, and institutional reputation.

This year, UVic has earned the top spot in two crucial categories: faculty awards and medical/science grants.

The university also takes second place in research activity and student awards. Moreover, UVic ranks third for scholarships and bursaries and library resources.

Faculty awards recognize the exceptional accomplishments of a university’s professors who have been honored with significant national and international prizes for their contributions.

UVic has consistently outperformed its peers in this category for five consecutive years.

UVic’s Vice-President Academic and Provost, Elizabeth Croft, expressed pride in the recognition, stating, “I’m proud of our faculty and the national and international recognition that they receive, as shown by these rankings. Through research-inspired teaching and scholarship, our professors provide an extraordinary, hands-on experience for students who’ve chosen to study at UVic.”

Furthermore, UVic maintains a dominant position as the leading university in its category for securing medical and science research grants. These grants are awarded by prestigious bodies such as the National Science and Engineering Research Council and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

While Simon Fraser University in Vancouver claims the top spot, the University of Victoria holds a firm second place, topping Waterloo in Ontario that sits at third.
