Things happen for a reason!

In an exciting turn of events, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced the signing of Victoria-native and quarterback Nathan Rourke from their practice squad to the active roster.

The move comes in the wake of an unfortunate left knee injury to starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence during the club’s recent victory over the Indianapolis Colts, setting the stage for an inspiring narrative that’s as much about determination as it is about talent.

Nathan Rourke’s journey to the NFL is not only a testament to his perseverance but also highlights the growing influence of Canadian talent on the international stage.

Born in Victoria, Rourke spent the early years of his life on the picturesque Vancouver Island. However, he grew up in Oakville, Ontario, where he started his football journey.

His football career began with the Burlington Stampeders, where he honed his skills before making his mark at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School in Oakville.

Rourke was consistently ranked among the top prospects entering the 2020 CFL Draft, ultimately becoming the seventh overall pick.

This draft position made him the highest-drafted Canadian quarterback since Jesse Palmer (yes, he’s now the host of the popular reality show, the Bachelor) in the 2001 CFL Draft.

Unfortunately, Rourke’s dreams were put on hold as the 2020 CFL season was canceled due to the global pandemic, preventing him from showcasing his talents on the field.

After playing two seasons with the CFL’s BC Lions, Rourke was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent on January 6th.

Although he began his journey with the team on the practice squad, his recent elevation to the active roster marks a significant milestone in his career.

The six-foot-one, 210-pound quarterback made his presence felt during the Jaguars’ exhibition schedule, completing 23-of-35 passes for 348 yards and a touchdown.

Rourke’s remarkable performance in the CFL in 2022 further solidified his standing as a top Canadian quarterback.

He was named the CFL’s top Canadian, completing an impressive 78.7% of his passes for 3,349 yards, along with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in just 10 regular-season starts. His dual-threat abilities were on full display, with 304 yards gained through rushing and seven rushing touchdowns.

Rourke’s journey to the NFL began at Ohio University, where he played from 2017 to 2019.

During his college career, he threw for an impressive 7,457 yards and accumulated 60 touchdowns. Notably, he led the Bobcats to three consecutive bowl victories.

Twice, he was honoured with the Jon Cornish Trophy in 2017 and 2018, recognizing him as the top Canadian football player in NCAA ranks.

As Rourke takes the step up to the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, his signing serves as a source of pride for both his hometown of Victoria, and the entire Canadian football community.

This move not only highlights the international appeal of the NFL but also signifies the increasing recognition of Canadian talent within the league.

As Jacksonville faces the New Orleans Saints in the near future, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Rourke.
