A brand-new playground has officially opened in Stadacona Park, promising a delightful and inclusive play experience for children of every age and ability.

This addition was celebrated by the City of Victoria during a community event on Saturday, where families, caregivers, and children came together to mark the grand opening of the new playground.

“There’s excitement and anticipation about this amazing new accessible playground,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “This playground is a celebration of fun for kids of all ages and abilities. We’re not just building play structures; together we are building an inclusive, compassionate, welcoming community for everyone.”

This vibrant and colorful playground, tailored to Stadacona Park, was meticulously designed with input from the community to ignite imagination and promote creative play.

Nestled within a lush greenspace adorned with mature trees and garden beds, the playground was conceived with accessibility at the forefront, offering a range of low-barrier play features suitable for children of varying ages and abilities.

Among its features are a towering structure complete with slides and climbing apparatus, swings, an in-ground trampoline, spinners, and springers.

The playground also boasts accessible play elements, such as a ride-on wheelchair swing, a disc swing, a chair swing, and a chair spinner.

The entire playground area also has an accessible rubberized play surface. To facilitate access to the lower landing in the tower, a gently sloping mound has been integrated into the play area, featuring activity panels and a small slide.

Situated adjacent to sport courts and a public restroom, this central location also provides easy access to the City’s cycling network and public transit. Additionally, an accessible parking space on Stadacona Avenue has been added as part of this project.

With the removal of the previous play area, park staff are now working to restore the park’s natural areas. This includes planting native trees, shrubs, and flowers, which will not only enhance the park’s aesthetics but also support local biodiversity.
