Victoria’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community organizes second peaceful protest against anti-trans group

Share

One month after protesters and counter protesters gathered on the BC legislature lawns, another demonstration is being planned for this weekend.

1 Million Voices For Inclusion is the group organizing the counter protest in response to announced anti-2SLGBTQIA+ protests in cities across Canada.

The activist organization say their mission is to educate the public, connect and mobilize our communities, and plan peaceful direct action to counter anti-2SLGBTQIA+ and anti-trans groups

The group organizing the anti-2SLGBTQIA+ protests is the same that organized the ‘1 Million March 4 Children’ on September 20th.

In the last meeting of the protesters and counter-protesters, over 2,500 people came out to stand up for what they believe in at the legislature — the counter-protesters outnumbering the anti-trans protesters five-to-one.

What they are butting heads over is the provincial sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) education programs.

The protesters would like to see education about gender identity and sexual orientation be removed from curriculums, but these SOGI programs exist to protect 2SLGBTQIA+ children from homophobic and transphobic parents.

Counter-protesters are trying to advocate for the protection and support of 2SLGBTQIA+ kids at school.

Organizers of the counter-protest say their demonstration will include speakers and organized celebrations of the trans and 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

At the September 20th demonstration, two arrests were made by VicPD after police said tensions rose and they ended up trying to disperse the large crowd.

This protest is planned for Saturday, October 21st, once again at the BC legislature’s front lawn.

There are also demonstrations happening in Abbotsford, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Parksville, Port Alberni, Surrey, Trail and Vancouver in BC, as well as in major cities across the country
