VicPD confirmed they shot and killed a full-grown cougar Tuesday afternoon in response to public safety concerns after the feline was spotted for the second time in the busy Selkirk Waterfront area.
Police responded just before 4 p.m. to a report of a full-grown cougar spotted in a park within the 300-block of Waterfront Crescent.
Earlier in the day, at around 5 a.m., the same cougar had been seen in the same area.
Taking into account the school and preschool in close proximity during active hours, along with the dense population in the area and the anticipated delay for Conservation officers to arrive, VicPD stated that they opted to dispatch the cougar based on the perceived risk to public safety.
“Situations where police are required to dispatch an animal are extremely rare. We understand the community’s concern for the animal’s well-being, and I want to assure everyone that this decision was not made lightly. However, ensuring the safety of our residents remains our top priority,” VicPD said in a statement.
Throughout the day Tuesday, officers utilized a patrol-car loudspeaker to caution pedestrians, cyclists, and dog walkers to steer clear of the area, while also providing escort for pedestrians to ensure their safety.
Additionally, police stationed an officer at the school during morning drop-off hours.
