‘Safe and stable housing’: 46 new homes open in downtown Victoria for unhoused population

For those who are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing houselessness, a new building meant to house and support Victoria’s most vulnerable population is opening.

The new six-storey building has been dubbed, ‘The Juniper,’ and is located at 1176 Yates Street and will offer 46 new studio units, each with its own private bathroom, shower and kitchenette with a full fridge.

Four units are accessible via wheelchair.

“The Juniper marks another step in our work to break the cycle of homelessness in Victoria and across the province,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing.

“This building is part of our ongoing work with community partners to make sure people experiencing homelessness have access to safe, secure homes with the crucial supports they need, in addition to safe and stable housing.”

The Juniper is to be operated by PHS Community Services who will be providing supports through their 24/7 staff.

The Province says Victoria’s houseless community will be able to access free life-skills training, employment assistance, counselling, physical and mental-health resources, meals as well as referrals to addiction treatment and recovery services.

There will also be round-the-clock security on site to help keep The Juniper’s residents and neighbouring communities safe.

“We know from experience that supportive housing makes a real difference for the residents and for communities, which is why I’m so pleased to see doors open on The Juniper,” said Grace Lore, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill.

“I would like to thank all of our project partners for working with us to create a supportive environment where residents can be bolstered in their ability to build secure and fulfilled lives.”

Mayor Marianne Alto also expressed that she is happy to have these units available to help Victoria’s community members who struggle to find housing.

“We are thrilled to see 46 new homes with support services made available in Victoria, offering those experiencing homelessness a safe and affordable place to live,” said Alto.

“Having PHS Community Services Society’s dedicated team of professional staff on site to support residents will be critical to achieving successful outcomes. We thank BC Housing for their leadership in making this project a reality.”

This building was paid for through the Province and BC Housing, who collectively contributed around $15 million to this project.
