Victoria Royals to host ceremonial puck drop to start countdown to Hockey Day in Canada

Grab your tickets and be a part of the ceremonial puck drop at the Victoria Royals game on Friday night, marking the start of the countdown to Hockey Day in Canada happening in January.

Not only that, tomorrow night’s game will be pet appreciation night as the Royals take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

The ceremonial puck drop at the November 17th game marks the commencement of the official countdown to Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada.

The days-long celebration will peak on Saturday, January 20th at Ship Point in the Inner Harbour. A traditional welcoming from the Songhees and Esquimalt Nation will commence as the Stanley Cup is paddled into the Victoria harbour.

Later in the evening, spectators will be invited to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre to witness the Victoria Royals in action!

The festivities will be hosted by Ron MacLean and boasting Sportsnet’s stellar lineup of NHL hosts, analysts, and reporters, is poised to deliver an array of hockey icons and family-friendly events.

Commencing on Wednesday, January 17th, the Scotiabank Hockey Day festivities will kick off with a series of community hockey events catering to all ages across Greater Victoria.

“I’m excited to show the country how Victoria celebrates hockey,” said John Wilson, chair of Victoria Hockey Legacy Society, a committee of local community leaders working to bring Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada to Vancouver Island for the first time.

“We really love to welcome people to our community, and we want to help show that hockey is a sport for everyone.”

Victoria will be the central hub for the broadcast and will feature the events and all seven Canadian NHL teams taking part across the country.

The variety of other events will include school visits and hockey camps for kids, NHL Alumni/Celebrity game at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, a banquet hosted by Sportsnet commentators, and more!

Additionally, a synthetic ice rink will also be showcased from Can-Ice International for the community to enjoy.

Appearances by hockey legends Cassie Campbell-Pascal, Wendel Clark, Lanny McDonald and Darcy Tucker Multiple events featuring the Stanley Cup, including a visit to Songhees Nation.

“The countdown to Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada in Victoria is officially underway and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Joel Darling, Executive Producer of NHL Special Events at Sportsnet.

“We look forward to shining a national spotlight on this vibrant community, and helping to share its rich hockey stories with the rest of Canada across all Sportsnet platforms.”

As for tomorrow, Friday, November 17th, the ceremonial puck drop for the Victoria Royals versus Lethbridge Hurricanes game will take place at 7:05 p.m.—with doors to the arena opening at 6 p.m.—and don’t forget it is Pet Appreciation Night!
