Here’s why you might see the Grinch on the Gorge this upcoming weekend

If the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes, so can yours!

The true meaning of Christmas is spreading joy and happiness, and Victoria resident Curtis Becker has found the perfect way to reach as many people as possible, and you’re invited.

This Saturday, on December 23rd from 11 a.m. until 1:15 p.m., chuck on your best festive outfit and join the Grinch on a paddle ride down the Gorge starting at Craigflower Beach!

Whether it’s from a paddle board, canoe, or a kayak, you’re encouraged to arrive with your jolliest smile and help bring the Christmas spirit to lucky onlookers.

Victoria Buzz had the privilege of chatting with Becker to get the story behind this hilarious and good-hearted idea.

“It was 2020 and everything was shut down because of the pandemic, so there wasn’t anything social going on at Christmas,” he began.

He said he had purchased a Grinch suit the year before for a family gathering and he’d always wanted to participate in the Halloween paddles that happen around town.

“The pandemic was starting to knock people and bring them down a bit and I just wanted to bring the Christmas spirit to everyone.”

So, Becker and his son’s girlfriend loaded up and got into costume—she put wire in her hair and dressed up as Cindy Lou Who.

“[We] took the beautiful day and couldn’t believe the amount of people walking along the Gorge, waving and pointing.”

“I was belly laughing under the mask, my gosh, I didn’t think [we’d] draw so much attention.”

Later on, friends of Becker’s were messaging him with photos of their Grinch and Cindy Lou Who characters paddling around, saying they were blowing up online.

“There was all of this feedback…people saying ‘Oh, I wish I would’ve known! I would’ve come out in my reindeer costume’…I thought, why not just invite them?”

And even though it’s taken a couple of years, he has stuck true to his word!

The fun impromptu paddling trip in 2020 is making a comeback and will now include anyone in the community looking for an active, festive activity this Saturday.

“My plan is to make sure we all stick together, play safe, and have fun!”

Don’t forget a personal flotation device or anything else that is required to keep you safe during this event.

Becker has confirmed they’re going rain or shine, so make sure you come prepared for the weather as well!
