Oak Bay police say they caught a young driver who they thought to be under the influence of drugs.

Just before Christmas, on Wednesday, December 20th police officers were conducting a checkstop around 7:25 p.m., along Beach Drive near Newport Avenue in order to catch drunk drivers.

Police say a vehicle travelling southbound attempted to evade the checkstop as they approached by turning into a golf course maintenance parking lot.

There they were stopped by police.

Police also say the driver was displaying signs of impairment via cannabis. Officers then conducted a field sobriety test and the driver reportedly performed poorly.

Officers say they found an already opened package of cannabis behind the passenger seat that was in arms reach of the driver.
