Parts of Vancouver Island will see snowfall and strong winds this weekend

Share

Maybe some island regions will get a white Christmas this year? Maybe?

Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for some parts of Vancouver Island as well as a wind warning for the upcoming weekend.

For those living in various central parts of the island, snow is coming.

Specifically, regions around Port Alberni and Courtenay can expect snow on Saturday with rain being prevalent through the rest of the week.

The average high temperatures for these regions through next week are between 2°C and 7°C with overnight lows reaching 2°C.

In all likelihood, any snow that does fall upon these regions will either melt due to the subsequent rain and temperatures that will remain above zero.

For those in the northernmost parts of Vancouver Island, snow won’t be a worry; however, there will be strong winds, according to Environment Canada.

The wind warning issued by Environment Canada is for exposed coastal sections of northern Vancouver Island, the Central Coast, the north Coast as well as Haida Gwaii from Saturday morning until late Saturday.

“A strong frontal system will cross the North and Central coast from tonight to Saturday afternoon,” said Environment Canada.

“Winds will rise to southeast 80 gusting to 110 km/h early Saturday, then ease Saturday evening.”

With any wind warning, the risk of power outages is heightened and Environment Canada is warning those impacted to plan accordingly.

By Sunday morning, Port Hardy and surrounding communities should be in the clear, aside from cloudy skies.

Victoria and the rest of the southern Vancouver Island regions should be in the clear for wind and snow, but it is expected to be rainy through the weekend with the sun coming back out for us on Monday.
