Sidney purchases one-acre of land to construct new community park

Sidney is about to have a new spot for the kids to play!

In a media release, the Town of Sidney confirmed it has finalized negotiations to acquire an approximately one-acre parcel of land close to downtown for the development of a community park.

The agreement encompasses properties located at 10103 and 10097 Third Street, in proximity to Rothesay Beach.

This decision stemmed from the Town’s initiative to conduct a Parkland Needs Assessment aimed at pinpointing gaps within Sidney’s existing parks system.

According to the release, the assessment highlighted the Shoreacres area as lacking a community park.

The agreed purchase price for the future park stands at $1.51 million.

Notably, the zoning of the property significantly contributes to its lower value compared to residential property in the Sidney area.

“The chance to purchase parkland at a reasonable price, in an area of need, represents a rare opportunity to ensure Sidney continues to be a complete and healthy community,” said Mayor Cliff McNeil-Smith.

“I’m glad Council is looking to the future and considering the need for greenspace as we accommodate more housing density and our population grows. This new park will be a place where people of all ages can stay active, make social connections, and
enjoy the outdoors.”

The chosen site has a rich history of serving as a hub for recreation, restoration, and play.

Dating back to 1909, it was the site of a post-operative rehabilitation center called Quisisana, offering facilities for tennis and lawn bowling. Additionally, the location served as the former home of Discovery House Early Childhood Centre, remembered by generations for its play structures and natural exploration areas.

The Town plans to fund the land purchase through assent-free borrowing, with the transfer of properties expected to occur in spring 2024.

Until then, the site remains private property, and the Town urges respect for the privacy of its current occupants.

Once the transfer is complete and the land is ready for public use, the park will initially function as an open greenspace. The Town intends to engage the community in discussions regarding more detailed park concept plans.
