Anyone up for an epic journey through a legendary thriller?

In collaboration with Bounce Performance Works, UVic Theatre faculty member Brian Richmond has adapted and is directing a public reading of Bram Stoker’s classic 19th century horror story, Dracula.

The adaptation is called Dracula—A Trilogy of Terror, being presented to audiences in three separate movements (consisting of seven episodes and an epilogue) to depict Dracula’s full glory.

All three movements will take place at the Phoenix Theatre located at the University of Victoria within the first week of January.

Wednesday, January 3rd at 7 p.m. will feature Part 1: Invasion, followed by Part 2: Exhumation on Friday, January 5th at 7 p.m., and lastly Part 3: Annihilation will commence on Sunday, January 7th at 2 p.m.

“I started working on this current adaptation over three years ago because of my great admiration for this late 19th century novel,” said Richmond.

“However, the more I worked on it, the more I became convinced of two things: The first being one’s absolute obligation to bring the great stories from the past into the 21st century and, in the case of Dracula, to address what I see as contemporary society’s tendency to trivialize terror.”

Spanning several countries and hundreds of human, animal and even insect characters, Richmond’s adaptation is designed to be played by ten actors who switch from role-to-role instantaneously.

It will be led by local acting legend Christopher Mackie as Count Dracula, and joining him includes two of UVic’s most talented current student actors Grace Fouracre as Lucy Westenra and Brigit Stewart as one of the Brides of Dracula.

Other actors include Sanjay Talwar, Amanda Lisman, Kholby Wardell, Paul Fauteux, Victor Dolha, Gretchen Lee, Jacob Richmond, Grace Fouracre, Brigit Stewart.

Equally impressive is the assembled dramaturgical team, which includes Rachel Ditor as lead dramaturge (text), John Mills-Cockell (music), Treena Stubel (movement), Judd Palmer (puppets), and Iris Bannerman (dialect coach).

“We are thrilled to be a part of the development of this exciting new project. We see this as a continuation of Bounce’s commitment to the evolution of new work in our community,” said Bounce Performance Works’ Artistic Director Treena Stubel.
