Thousands without power on Christmas Day due to high winds on Vancouver Island

Share

The Christmas weekend was fraught with wind storms for all Vancouver Islanders, but some regions got it worse than others and remained without power on Boxing Day.

Wind warnings were first issued for some areas of the island on December 24th but continued sporadically through the weekend, with the strong winds finally dying off in the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 26th.

These winds caused havoc for BC Hydro employees who were trying to relax with their friends and family, but nature had other plans.

There is a current regional alert for northern Vancouver Island, which says that around 200 customers around the Zeballos area were without power overnight, but crews won’t be able to make it to the area until sometime in the morning.

In addition to this regional alert, around 5,500 Vancouver Islanders, mostly in central island municipalities, have yet to be able to turn the lights on.

Denman Island and Hornby Island have lost power entirely with nearly 2,000 residents impacted by the outage which downed a power line.

Although Greater Victoria and other south island areas were also hit with a storm which brought strong winds with it, there are no outages affecting the region aside from two small outages on Salt Spring Island.

As of Boxing Day morning most situations are being worked on while a few lower priority outages are still listed as under investigation.

Since the storm struck the island, all regions, with the exception of northern and central Vancouver Island, have been cleared of the wind warnings which impacted them overnight.

According to Environment Canada, southeasterly winds of 60 km/h with gusts up to 120 km/h over exposed coastal sections tonight and into Wednesday.
