Tragic collision involving sit-down lawnmower claims life of 14-year-old in Nanaimo

In a devastating incident on Thursday afternoon, a collision between a sit-down lawnmower and a pickup truck led to the tragic death of a 14-year-old boy.

The unfortunate collision took place at around 12:15 p.m. at the intersection of Lindsey Road and White Road in Cedar.

First responders, including police, BCEHS, and Cedar Volunteer Fire Department rushed to the scene after the collision occurred.

Despite their immediate efforts in providing emergency first aid, the injuries sustained by the youth were severe and life-threatening.

The boy was transported by paramedics to Nanaimo General Hospital, where, unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased.

Nanaimo RCMP said the BC Coroners Service has been engaged in the investigation following this heartbreaking incident.

The driver of the involved pickup truck, a 45-year-old man, cooperated with investigators and remained at the scene.

Investigations have ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors in the collision. The roads were reported to be wet at the time of the accident.

“We extend our sincere thoughts and condolences to everyone impacted by this tragic incident, including many of the first responders who live and work in the area,” said R/ Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

The intersection remained closed for several hours to facilitate the Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Unit’s examination of the scene, with additional support from an RCMP Accident Reconstructionist.

Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services have been notified, and the investigation is ongoing as authorities work to uncover further details surrounding this tragic accident.
