Everything you need to know about Victoria’s Hockey Day in Canada next week

Hockey fans, if you’ve been keeping track of the countdown, then you know the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada is nearly upon us!

This days-long celebration will kick off on Wednesday, January 17th with a series of community hockey events catering to all ages across Greater Victoria.

This will include a series of “School Try it Clinics” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a mini tournament between Victoria Police NHL Street Hockey and Greater Victoria Minor Ball Hockey Association.

“I’m excited to show the country how Victoria celebrates hockey,” said John Wilson, chair of Victoria Hockey Legacy Society, a committee of local community leaders working to bring Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada to Vancouver Island for the first time.

“We really love to welcome people to our community, and we want to help show that hockey is a sport for everyone.”

This exceptional event will continue through the week, offering a wonderful mix of opportunities such as the Hockey for All Community Rink and the glamorous Hockey Day in Canada gala on Thursday, January 18th.

On Friday, January 19th, fans are encouraged to check out the SHDIC Alumni and Celebrity Classic Game at 7:30 p.m.

The days-long celebration will peak on Saturday, January 20th at Ship Point in the Inner Harbour. A traditional welcoming from the Songhees and Esquimalt Nation will commence as the Stanley Cup is paddled into the Victoria harbour.

Later in the evening, spectators will be invited to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre to witness the Victoria Royals in action as they take on the Kamloops Blazers!

The festivities will be hosted by Ron MacLean and boasting Sportsnet’s stellar lineup of NHL hosts, analysts, and reporters, is poised to deliver an array of hockey icons and family-friendly events.

Appearances by hockey legends Cassie Campbell-Pascal, Wendel Clark, Lanny McDonald and Darcy Tucker can be expected, multiple events will even feature the Stanley Cup, including a visit to Songhees Nation.

Victoria will be the central hub for the broadcast and will feature the events and all seven Canadian NHL teams taking part across the country.
