Early this morning, on Tuesday, January 23rd, a man was arrested for allegedly stabbing a cyclist in what VicPD say was a random attack.

Police say that, prior to the stabbing, the man they arrested had been reportedly committing “a series of offences” at a childcare facility in downtown Victoria.

The stabbing took place just outside the front entrance of VicPD headquarters near the intersection of Caledonia Avenue and Quadra Street around 8 a.m.

“The victim was passing by on a bicycle when they were approached by the suspect and slashed with a knife,” said a VicPD spokesperson in a media release.

The victim was transported to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

While investigating, after the man had been taken into custody, police discovered that around one hour before he reportedly stabbed the cyclist, their suspect had allegedly entered a downtown childcare centre and stole a tablet before pulling the fire alarm and fleeing on foot.

“No children were believed to be in the vicinity of the suspect at the time of the incident,” said VicPD.

Police say their suspect remains in custody pending a court hearing and further details cannot be shared at this time.
