Investigators with Nanaimo RCMP are hoping tattoos will aid in the identification of a body found washed ashore Wednesday off Neck Point.

According to Reserve Constable Gary O’Brien, who provided details in an email statement, the body, in a state of “significant” decomposition, has posed challenges for investigators attempting to establish the individual’s identity.

“We found several tattoos, and hopefully, that will lead us toward making a positive ID,” expressed O’Brien, emphasizing the critical role these markings may play in the investigation.

The grim discovery was made on Wednesday in the ocean off Neck Point, an area adjoining Hammond Bay.

The precise circumstances surrounding the incident remain undisclosed as authorities continue their efforts to piece together the events leading to the body’s presence in the waters.

When asked about releasing details on the designs of the tattoos, O’Brien said “No, no need to, we are confident the remains will be identified shortly.”
