Snowfall warning in Victoria prompts warning for motorists to avoid driving

Share

Given the current snowfall warning that will impact Victoria sometime in the evening of Tuesday, January 16th, the BC government has put out a warning for drivers to stay home, if possible.

Between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, Environment Canada is predicting around 10 centimetres of snow for southern regions of Vancouver Island.

Because of this, BC’s Ministry of Transportation has issued a warning that commuting on Wednesday morning may increase risk of collision.

“The Province’s maintenance contractors will be out in full force, applying brine and abrasives, and clearing snow as it accumulates,” said the Ministry of Transportation in a media release.

“However, freezing rain is one of the most difficult weather conditions to effectively manage. Bridges and roads may be closed to traffic in the interest of public safety.”

On Vancouver Island, Highway 1 on the Malahat will have chain up protocol implemented, beginning at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, and will remain in effect overnight as needed.

“With the risk of freezing rain, people should avoid travel by vehicle on Tuesday night through Wednesday morning’s commute,” the Province said.

“Should travel be necessary, drivers must ensure their vehicle is properly equipped for winter conditions, including having winter or snow-rated tires in good condition.”

One precaution the Province recommends is that there are several live Drive BC cameras set up along major traffic corridors that update regularly so motorists can check conditions before they leave for their destination.

They also recommend packing an emergency kit with blankets, warm clothes and food, just in case.

Bus routes may also be impacted as well as popular cyclist routes.
