‘SO-HIGH’ and ‘UNSAFE’ among the 2,600 personalized BC licence plates rejected last year

Share

Every year, ICBC gets thousands upon thousands of requests for personalized licence plate slogans, and every year, British Columbians push the bounds of what is appropriate in their choices.

But not everything that gets requested gets approved.

According to ICBC, last year there were around 9,500 total requests for personalized licences, and of those around 2,600 were rejected.

This means only 73% of the requests were deemed appropriate while the remaining 27% were not.

“ICBC’s dedicated team meticulously reviews every application to ensure each slogan is appropriate to display on a BC licence plate,” said Sandy-Anne Dodig, ICBC’s Manager of Insurance Operations Support.

“A personalized licence plate can be a creative way to express yourself, and we encourage drivers to review the criteria and guidelines on icbc.com prior to applying.”

ICBC says they deem a licence inappropriate when they can be considered discriminatory, sexually suggestive, abusive or derogatory in any language.

Despite the rejected licences not being roadworthy for their crude and inappropriate nature, every year, the ICBC puts together a list of the ones they thought funniest, or most ludicrous.

Here are some of ICBC’s highlights of the 2023 rejection pile:

  • YSO SLO
