Special weather statement issued as polar vortex moves over Vancouver Island

Share

As a polar vortex sweeps over British Columbia, Vancouver Island is poised for a significant drop in temperatures.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning of substantial snowfall in inland areas of the central and south coasts.

In addition, the statement suggests the potential for snow at sea level along the coastal regions of the south coast and eastern Vancouver Island, followed by heavy rainfall—western and southern Vancouver Island will also experience very strong winds.

According to the weather agency, the first series of storms is slated to bring wintry weather along the BC coast from Monday through Tuesday.

Monday will likely see snow reaching sea level in coastal sections of the south coast and eastern Vancouver Island, with a transition to rain by afternoon due to the influx of mild air.

Monday night is expected to bring heavy rain, particularly impacting the western portion of  Vancouver Island.

Inland areas and higher elevations will maintain cold enough temperatures for sustained snowfall, intensifying through Monday night with significant accumulations anticipated.

Furthermore, powerful winds are forecasted for the western side of Vancouver Island on Monday night, extending into Tuesday and eventually reaching the inner south coast.

As the event approaches, Environment Canada advises that weather warnings might be issued.

Specific to Victoria, periods of flurries are expected starting Thursday, persisting until at least Saturday, with a chance of light snow on Wednesday.

Temperatures could plummet to -6 later in the week, further enhancing the snowfall potential.

Travelers, particularly those on highways like the Malahat, are urged to prepare adequately before embarking on journeys, ensuring their vehicles are equipped with appropriate winter tires.
