There’s an award-winning Canadian musical coming to Victoria next month

The Canadian College of the Performing Arts (CCPA) is thrilled to announce the arrival of the multiple Tony Award winning, Canadian hit, The Drowsy Chaperone!

It will begin showing from February 9th to February 17th at the CCPA’s Performance Hall.

As described, it’s a hilarious musical farce blending nostalgia with a contemporary flair, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another.

This will be CCPA’s first time producing the play as a part of their 25th anniversary season—the most significant season of their history so far.

The show is set to include CCPA’s Studio Ensemble Program students in their last production prior to graduation, so it’ll be extra special to those lucky students!

“The Drowsy Chaperone began as an engagement gift between friends and went on to become one of the most successful Canadian musicals ever created. It is a love letter to the art form and a joy-filled way for the program to culminate,” said celebrated musical theatre director and choreographer, Dayna Tekatch.

“The fact that the students are not only playing multiple roles onstage but are creating all design and technical aspects of this production themselves makes it a very personal work of art for us to imagine together. A beautiful way to experience and to share this piece of Canadian musical theatre history.”

Tekatch is known for her Canadian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the Canadian production of Come From Away.

Additionally, the show’s musical director, Jeff Poynter, is known locally as a member of the celebrated band, West My Friend and is said to have been the musical director in last season’s Joseph and the Technicolour Dream Coat.

CCPA’s Managing Artistic Director, Caleb Marshall, intentionally selected The Drowsy Chaperone as the penultimate production of the season.

“Perhaps the greatest Canadian musical the public has probably never heard of—it will be a delightful surprise for many. A modern throwback jam-packed with everything you could ever hope to cram into a musical,” he said.

“This year offers classic storytelling, beloved titles, historical journeys, – while celebrating theatrical magic, musical theatre, and our Canadian pride.”
