Vancouver Canucks extend Jim Rutherford’s contract by multiple years

When the Vancouver Canucks invited credentialed media to a press conference at Rogers Arena this morning which they dubbed “important”, many began speculating.

Rumours in the hockey world swirled with everything from potential trades to the extension of Elias Pettersson’s contract.

But alas, the announcement was confirmed to be regarding the contract extension for Canucks President of Hockey Operations, Jim Rutherford.

“On behalf of ownership, our company, and our fans, we are thrilled to have Jim continue in his role as President of Hockey Operations for the Vancouver Canucks,” said Francesco Aquilini, Chairman and Governor, NHL.

“Since arriving in Vancouver, Jim’s strategic vision has revitalized the competitiveness of our team, generating excitement among fans, players, and employees alike. We look forward to having the Canucks continue to progress under Jim’s leadership.”

The contract will be a multi-year contract extension—it’s believed to be a 3-year deal.

Rutherford assumed the role on December 11th, 2021, with his initial contract scheduled to conclude after the current season.

In his tenure, the 74-year-old executive has successfully revamped both the front office and the team, marking a significant turning point in their performance.

After a tumultuous start to his tenure last season, going 0 for 7 in the initial games of his first full season as president, Rutherford, alongside his hand-picked general manager, Patrik Allvin, appears to have righted the ship.

They achieved this by bringing in their own head coach, Rick Tocchet, and acquiring key new players such as Filip Hronek, Casey DeSmith, Carson Soucy, and Ian Cole.

Presently leading the National Hockey League, the Canucks are on track to match the franchise’s best point total of 117, previously set by the 2010-11 team. Furthermore, they are set to dispatch five players and head coach Rick Tocchet to the NHL All-Star Game.

“I feel the energy and enthusiasm of our fan base every day and I am committed to building on our recent success to solidify the foundation for years to come,” said Rutherford.

“My family and I love living here and working with the Aquilini family. Ownership, management, coaches, players and staff all have a unified vision in understanding what it takes to win.”

Rutherford has won three Stanley Cups in his time in the NHL: leading the Carolina Hurricanes to victory in 2006 as president and general manager of the team, and achieving dual triumphs as the general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
