Nanaimo unveils new Indigenous designed utility covers that will soon adorn the streets

The City of Nanaimo unveiled a new series of three diverse utility covers which will be both functional for City staff as well as beautiful, as they were designed by three talented local artists.

The City partnered with Ay Lelum, a design house that is situated on the Snuneymuxw First Nation. Together with Al Lelum, artist Joel Good created the three designs which were revealed on Wednesday, February 14th.

These new designs will be used for the next decade at least and will serve as a good reminder that the city itself lies within Snuneymuxw territory, according to the City.

“The storm cover design showcases two supernatural Eagles, representing strength, resilience and protection,” wrote a City spokesperson in a statement.

“The City of Nanaimo commits to safeguarding the community during storms and ensuring a safe environment for its residents.”

Sanitary covers will feature a frog, because frogs purify water sources in nature and the City of Nanaimo does the same for its residents.

Lastly, the water cover design will feature an orca. This is meant to symbolize the power and strength of the hul’q’umi’num’ culture.

“There are few things that add as much character to a city as art does, and when that art can honour both culture and history, we grow stronger as a community,” said Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog.

“Ay Lelum and Joel Good bring Snuneymuxw tradition and hul’q’umi’num culture to each of our streets with these beautiful designs, reminding us that we are all connected in this incredible city.”

Ay Lelum and Joel Good honour Snuneymuxw knowledge through the traditional Coast Salish art taught to them by their father, Dr. William Good.

“They have gifted the people of Nanaimo with this powerful hul’q’umi’num’ artform,” the City said.

In the coming months, Nanaimo residents will begin to see these covers throughout the city.
