GoFundMe launched for man involved in serious Douglas Street crash

Share

A GoFundMe has been arranged for the victim of a serious multi-vehicle crash on Douglas Street last week.

David Bruun was the victim of a horrific car accident in which another car ran a red light at high speeds, t-boning his truck, causing it to disintegrate as he spun across the intersection, slamming into a bus and traffic post, before finally coming to a halt.

According to the GoFundMe, Bruun sustained multiple injuries—a bleeding kidney, bleeding lungs, a fractured vertebrae, and a bad concussion.

While Bruun was more optimistic about returning to work within a few weeks, realistically, he won’t be able to work for 3-6 months as he will need to remain in a neck brace while his vertebrae heals, according to the GoFundMe.

Surveillance footage from Budget Brake & Muffler shows a speeding car running a red light at Bay and Douglas streets and smashing into a pickup truck, which then collided with a BC Transit bus, at around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20th.

A VicPD officer can be seen turning right onto Douglas seconds before the crash, with the speeding car blasting past the officer in the opposite direction.

Police say that when they arrived at the crash scene, the front end of the car was engulfed in flames and bystanders were aiding in removing the driver and passenger from the vehicle.

Two people could be seen waiting at the crosswalk just feet from the bus narrowly escaped the flying debris.

After running quickly from the crash, they can be seen going back to check on the burning car.

Due to the force of the impact, the truck was pushed into the front end of the BC Transit bus involved, which was headed northbound on Douglas Street.

At the time, VicPD described his injuries as serious and possibly life-altering injuries, while the driver and passenger of the car only sustained minor injuries. There were passengers on board the bus at the time of the collision, but no significant injuries were reported.

“We are asking for any donations, big and small, to help cover David’s costs of living and any additional costs during this time,” said Jean-Marc De Groot who started the fundraiser.

“It’s unclear whether he’ll receive any support from ICBC as they are fighting their responsibility to rightfully cover the costs of the damage.”

De Groot described Bruun as one of the kindest, most generous, and giving people alive.

“He never asks for anything, and always gives back in droves – even taking the time to call from the hospital post-crash to cover his Jiu-Jitsu shifts,” added De Groot.

As of this publication, no charges have been laid against the driver of the black car that ran the red light at high-speeds.

In an email statement to Victoria Buzz, a VicPD spokesperson said the file is still under investigation and no update was available.

“These serious collision investigations are complex and take time to investigate. It could be a few weeks or more before we have an update.”

As for the GoFundMe, as of this publication, $8,782 of its $10,000 goal has been raised.
