An independent police accountability organization has launched an investigation into a West Shore RCMP officer who was in a collision with a cyclist while driving their unmarked police cruiser in Langford last week.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) investigates any situation in which a person sustains injuries or dies as a result of a police interaction.

The IIO says that at around 2:25 p.m. on March 20th an off-duty officer with the West Shore RCMP was driving southbound in the 2500 block of Millstream Road.

The officer reportedly collided with a cyclist while driving an unmarked police cruiser.

The IIO say at this time part of their investigation is to determine which vehicle struck who.

According to the IIO, the victim sustained serious injuries in the collision.

Now, the IIO is investigating the circumstances that led to the cyclist’s serious injuries to determine if it was them or the officer who was at fault.

The IIO will determine if charges should be recommended to the Crown regarding the police officer’s action or inaction.

Any person who witnessed the collision should contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the IIO’s website.
