Nanaimo RCMP warns of speeding ticket scam going through the area

Nanaimo RCMP are warning of a speeding ticket scam that’s making its way through the area right now.

On Monday, March 25th, police received numerous calls from the public asking if the speeding ticket text messages they were receiving were legitimate.

According to a media release, the text is the same one that numerous individuals in the Okanagan received as well—which also prompted a news release to be issued by Kelowna RCMP.

Below is a picture of the exact text message that is being sent:

It reads that the receiver was caught speeding in a school zone and must follow the link provided to settle the ticket without having to attend court.

Once at the website, the receiver is then asked to provide a credit card number.

“It’s just another scam to get a hold of your money via your credit card,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Just delete it but afterwards make sure you share the text message with friends and family so they don’t fall for it.”

Better to err on the side of caution!
