Popular downtown Victoria dance club announces they are closing at the end of the month

Hermann’s Upstairs ownership group, the Arts on View Society, announced last week that they would be closing at the end of the month.

In a post on their website, the Arts on View Society say they have decided to terminate their lease with the Estate of Hermann Nieweler for the second and third floors that make up Hermann’s Upstairs.

Hermann Nieweler passed away in 2015 and the following year is when the Arts on View Society took over from his family who still owned the building.

They have to be out of the space by March 31st, according to the post.

Staff were given notice that they would be laid off as of the end of the month as well.

“This change allows us to focus specifically on the operations of Hermann’s Jazz Club and View Street Social while we explore new ways of programming the upstairs space in a financially viable manner,” the Arts on View Society wrote.

They added their vision remains intact for the spaces they will continue to operate—creating and sustaining a performing arts center in downtown Victoria.

Back in September of last year, they also posted a lengthy update on their financial status and the situation they have found themselves in regarding Hermann’s Jazz Club in which they pleaded for their patrons to help them via donations.

In the post they detailed how Arts on View Society took over management of Hermann’s Jazz Club and View Street Social in 2019, just ahead of the pandemic.

Then, coming out of the pandemic, they acquired the second and third floors which they turned into Hermann’s Upstairs and Hermann’s Lounge, but now, the popular dance club will be no more.

Victoria Buzz reached out to Hermann’s Upstairs for an interview, but the club management did not respond prior to publication.
