Shawnigan Lake RCMP confirm 17-year-old killed in Mill Bay highway crash

A tragic collision on the Trans Canada Highway in Mill Bay has resulted in the loss of a young life.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP have confirmed a teenager died in a two-vehicle collision along Highway near Butterfield Road on Thursday.

According to police, the collision, which occurred at around 9:15 a.m. on February 29th, involved two vehicles: a white Volvo and a black truck.

Initial investigations suggest that the Volvo, driven by a 17-year-old, made a left turn from Butterfield Road onto the Trans Canada Highway.

Tragically, the Volvo was struck by the southbound black truck.

While the driver of the truck sustained minor injuries, the young driver of the Volvo succumbed to the impact of the collision.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the accident.

In response to the incident, the highway was closed until shortly after 1 p.m. as a collision analyst reviewed the scene.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision remains ongoing.

Authorities are actively seeking information and urging any witnesses to come forward.

The deceased was a grade 12 student who attended Frances Kelsey Secondary School located on Shawnigan-Mill Bay Road.

Staff at the school sent out a letter to the school community confirming that a senior student at the school was the victim in the crash.
