Vancouver Island grocery stores launch campaign to raise money for cancer patients

Grocery shopping for a good cause!

Starting today, on Friday, March 1st and running until March 21st, grocers across Vancouver Island are coming together to raise awareness and funds for BC Cancer through the annual ‘Grocers Go Beyond Campaign’.

The funds collected will go towards Victoria’s new Integrated Care and Research Pavilion, whose goal is to enhance Supportive Care for cancer patients across the Island.

Inspired by the idea of ‘flower power,’ $2.65 of every potted gerbera, cyclamen, violet or begonia sold will go directly to supporting the expansion of BC Cancer in Victoria.

There are multiple participating grocers including Red Barn Market, Country Grocer, Thrifty Foods, Fairway Market and Tru Value Foods.

This year’s funds being utilized to fully fund and renovate an 11,000 square foot building will be crucial for addressing the needs of patients—whether it’s the physical or psychological impacts of cancer and its treatments on patients.

According to a media release, this marks the first time in history that a building will be fully funded through Foundation donor support.

Over 6,000 new cases are diagnosed each year on Vancouver Island and that number is growing due to an aging and growing population.

Every little bit helps and the BC Cancer Foundation is happy to receive whatever you’re comfortable giving if you’re unable to purchase flowers during this campaign.
