Dive back in time and immerse yourself in the rich tapestries of art and history!

The Ross Bay Villa Historic House Museum is to host their first-ever art exhibition, open and free to the public on May 11th and 18th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The show will feature contemporary urban landscape paintings in oil by Victoria painter Mone Vogel titled, Traces of Old Victoria.

Vogel focuses on capturing local landmarks she holds dear in hopes of preserving the life they breathe into the community.

Kathryn McAllister, the President at Ross Bay Villa expressed her excitement to have Vogel’s work displayed as a way to honour the beauty of the city.

“Victoria has a specific sense of place for visitors and locals alike. It can be easy to take the urban landscape around us for granted,” she told Victoria Buzz.

“By learning more about the community and landmarks we pass by every day, we can gain a deeper appreciation and understanding for the land that has undergone so much change. Mone Vogel’s art offers a visual language for that understanding.”

McAllister added that because the Villa has undergone extensive restoration since 2000, and Vogel too wishes to preserve pieces of the city’s beauty, having her work displayed in such a beautiful historic house seemed a natural fit.

Visitors will get to experience the display of never-before exhibited art that focuses on local landmarks while being immersed in this home that has been a part of Victoria since 1865.

It will provide a wonderful chance to reflect on what we pass by every day and what to value and protect.

“The room the exhibition is in started as the master bedroom, as the Roscoe family had their first child in 1865. Then during the 20th century, it became the kitchen, and today is the Society’s multipurpose activity room.”

To add to the community’s understanding of the art and associated history of Victoria, there will also be a highlighted lecture given by historian Nick Russell, PhD, and Vogel herself on May 9th at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for this talk are available here, and can be purchased for $10.

If you don’t get the chance to catch this art exhibition, Ross Bay Villa hosts monthly events, including lectures and workshops, related to local history and the specific history of the house and Victorian era family who first lived there.
