A 42-year-old cyclist from Calgary is not expected to recover after a crash on Prospect Lake Road.

On Tuesday, just after 2 p.m., Saanich Police were called to a collision between a cyclist and a van on Prospect Lake Road near Munn Road.

A group of cyclists from Alberta were travelling south on Prospect Lake Rd when they approached a sharp right turn near the Munn Road intersection.

The cyclist then lost control of his bicycle, slid across the centre line and struck a service vehicle travelling north on Prospect Lake Rd.

Police said the cyclist was pinned under the van and had to be extracted by emergency crews. He was rushed to hospital and is not expected to survive his injuries.

Police say investigators gathered evidence from the scene and have spoken with witnesses as well as the driver of the Shaw Cable van involved in the crash.

Saanich Police say the driver is not at fault in the crash and speed did not play a factor in the crash.

The cyclist’s family was contacted and has travelled to Victoria to be with the man.

Police have not released his name.
