Three teenagers were roaming the streets early Wednesday morning when officers stopped to chat with them, and in the process found them carrying a cache of weapons.
At around 3:20 a.m. on June 12th, Nanaimo RCMP patrol officers spotted three 15 year old boys walking along Northfield Road, one of whom appeared to have an object hanging from his waist.

Intrigued, the officers decided to stop and chat with the boys and in the process found out that the object was a bat, which the teenager said was found along the roadside and was being used for baseball in a nearby field.
Not buying his explanation, the officers asked all three remove any other weapons in their possession.
To their amazement, the two of the three teenagers proceeded to pull out a hatchet, a 5″ double sided knife, a multi-tool, a hammer, a box cutter, and a can of spray paint from their backpacks.
When asked why they were carrying all these weapons, they collectively responded saying “for protection”.
“There is no need for anyone to be walking around in our community with these kinds of items as they could easily end up being used against you,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien.
“Secondly, some of the weapons, namely the hatchet, double sided knife and hammer could lead to criminal code charges if they are used inappropriately.”
Their weapons and tools were seized by police and the three boys were given a ride to their respective homes, where police gave their parents the CliffsNotes version of events.
