A single-vehicle crash in Campbell River on Wednesday has left the driver dead and injured his two passengers.

RCMP say the collision occurred in the 100 block of the South Island Highway at approximately 3:30 p.m. on January 13th.

A pickup truck veered off the highway, striking a post and concrete outside of the Ocean Shores apartment complex. The crash caused severe damage to the vehicle and destroyed a bus stop at the location.

Firefighters with the Campbell River Fire Department deployed the jaws of life to extract the 50-year-old male driver.

He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The vehicle’s two passengers, a 53-year-old male and a 73-old female, were also taken to Campbell River Hospital to be treated.

RCMP say they believe the driver suffered a severe medical event that caused the collision. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors.

The accident seriously affected traffic until 6 p.m. while a traffic reconstructionist worked on the scene.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the driver and we are hoping for a full recovery for both passengers,” said Cst Maury Tyre.

“We’d also like to thanks BC Ambulance, Campbell River Fire, and medical staff at the Campbell River Hospital for their outstanding professionalism in a very difficult situation.”

The BC Coroner’s Service is continuing to investigate.
