Saanich Police confirm altercation lead to death of pedestrian struck by garbage truck

Saanich Police have confirmed there was an altercation prior to the death of a 34-year-old pedestrian struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred just before 4 p.m. at the northeast corner of Douglas Street and Saanich Road near Uptown Shopping Centre.

Police confirmed that a physical altercation occurred between two pedestrians which lead to one of the men being struck by a passing commercial truck.

The 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The other pedestrian involved in the altercation was arrested on scene.

It’s unclear if the individual was pushed into the truck or if it was accidental.  The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) has taken over the investigation and is appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Police said the driver of the truck is cooperating and is not the subject of the investigation.

Due to the location of the incident, traffic in the area was significantly affected for several hours while officers investigated.

Anyone in the area of Douglas Street and Saanich Road between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 1st with dashcam footage, is asked to contact Saanich Police.

There are no other suspects involved.
