LifeLabs may face a potential worker strike starting Friday

LifeLabs may be facing a potential strike from their workers this week.

The BC Government Service Employees’ Union served a 72-hour strike notice on behalf of LifeLabs employees this week with workers threatening to go on strike as early as 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22nd.

If needs are not met, most LifeLabs would close, except that essential service agreements ensure that some locations will stay open.

Employees with LifeLabs have issued a statement regarding the low wages and poor working conditions at LifeLabs here.

Recently, LifeLabs have had to close two Victoria locations due to staffing shortages.

“BCGEU members working at LifeLabs are fighting to change this by asking their employer for fair wages and working conditions so they can better attract and keep staff and in turn, serve the public better,” LifeLabs said in a media statement.

“LifeLabs workers don’t want to strike. But after over six months of bargaining and several rounds of mediation, LifeLabs has led its workers down the path of job action instead of offering a fair and respectful contract.”
