On Monday, amidst the flooding natural disaster, the BC government moved to create protection zones around health care facilities targeted by protestors against COVID-19 vaccines and treatment services.
The bill, introduced by Attorney General David Eby, is intended to preserve safe and unimpeded access for people seeking hospital services and going to work at hospitals.
In September, some hospitals in BC were targeted by protestors against proof-of-vaccination requirements.
If the proposed legislation is passed, a 20-metre access zone will be established around hospitals, COVID-19 test and vaccination centres, and K-12 schools.
The legislation is expected to pass by the end of November and would expire on July 1st, 2023.
“While everyone has a right to protest, interfering with patients accessing hospital care or with kids trying to get to school is completely unacceptable,” Premier Horgan said on Monday.
“This legislation will help to keep these important facilities secure and ensure the safety of both those who use them and those who work in them.”
