Share

Today, hundreds of people in Victoria will be fasting, taking part in various workshops at the Victoria Conference Centre, and marching to the B.C. Legislature to commemorate the 7th annual Moose Hide Provincial Gathering and Day of Fasting.

The movement was founded by Indigenous and non-Indigenous men and boys who wanted to stand up against violence towards women and children.

It is specifically aimed at raising awareness about over 1,200 Indigenous woman who have gone missing or been murdered in Canada.

Registration for the event began at 8:30 AM, and the day’s activities will take place from 9 AM to 5 PM today – everyone is welcome to attend any or all parts of the event free of charge.

Support from the Premier

As a show of support and reconciliation, Premier John Horgan will be walking with Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Scott Fraser, and Moose Hide Campaign co-founders Paul and Raven Lacerte, from Thunderbird Park to the steps of the British Columbia Parliament Buildings to give away the one millionth moose hide pin today.

Belleville Street between Douglas and Government Streets will be closed for the walk which will be taking place at noon today.

Victoria Police joins in

Victoria Police Department officers and staff will be displaying their support by wearing a square moose hide patch on their uniforms.

They will also be participating in today’s fast and gathering as a continuing promise to play their part in securing the safety of Indigenous and non-Indigenous women and children in Canada.
